As I sit here making a list of what I need, packing, and printing off all the right documents, I realize that my three month journey to England starts in 4 days. My name is Matthew (Matt) Roddy and I am currently a junior at Mckendree University. I am majoring in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice and a minor in Leadership. This semester I will be studying at the University of Essex in Colchester England. I will be in England from September 25 until December 15.

I truly believe that my decision to study abroad is one of the greatest I have ever made. The decision as of where to study was a slightly harder decision. I knew that I wanted to go to an English speaking country, since I am not bilingual, and that it was going to be England or Australia. I chose England because I felt that there would be more chances to visit other countries, and therefore I would be able to experience a variety of cultures. I chose this particular institution because of tuition price and its student to teacher ratio. Also by looking on their website I realized how many student organizations they have which would allow me to interact with more people.

People keep asking me if I’m nervous or scared. No, I am neither. I am purely excited to be taking this once in a life time opportunity, even though I will be alone from the time I leave St. Louis on Tuesday morning until I get to England the next day. I honestly do not know a whole lot of what to expect or what classes will be like or really about anything else. Most people would be freaking out but that is the most exciting part for me, the unknown.

I will try to post something once a week, at least, so that you guys can be learning the culture as I go through it. Thanks for reading!
